What can I do to prevent burns?
• Keep matches and lighters away from children. Teach children not to play with matches or other things that can start a fire.
• Put smoke detectors in all bedrooms and hallways. Test smoke detectors monthly. Replace batteries every 3 to 5 months.
• Teach children to stop, drop, and roll to the ground if their clothes catch on fire.
• Get a fire extinguisher for your home. Keep it handy and know how to use it.
• Set your water heater at 120 degrees F. If it is higher than this, children can be burned by very hot water coming out of the faucet.
• Make sure the bath water isn't too hot before you put your child in the tub. Put your elbow in the bath water to test how hot it is.
• Keep children away from the stove, irons, and curling irons. Turn off and unplug these things when you are not using them.
• Children like to reach up and grab things. Turn pot handles away so your child can't grab them.
• Never hold your child while drinking a hot liquid like coffee.
• Never hold your child while cooking by the stove.
• Never heat your child's bottle or food in a microwave oven. Some parts may get so hot they can burn your child.
• Teach children what to do in case of a fire.
