Diet: The key to growing big and strong

The first year is the most important time in your child's nutritional life. Breast-feeding or formula feeding is recommended for the first year of your child's life. Both provide the appropriate balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals needed for development. Ask your child's doctor to discuss what type of feeding is best for your child.

You can begin introducing solid baby food at 4 to 6 months old. Baby cereal or fruits is usually introduced first (but not both).

Strained, cooked vegetables can eventually be added to your child's diet. When meats are added, they should always be thoroughly cooked, and all surfaces and utensils should be cleaned after contact with raw meat.
